Irrigation season: the tester's calendar
The seasonal shape of a testing business in freeze climates: spring startups, the compressed testing window, fall shutdowns, smoothing the year with fire and commercial work, route waves, and weather contingencies.
In freeze climates, the backflow testing trade has a heartbeat, and it is set by irrigation. Every sprinkler system that was drained and blown out before winter gets pressurized again when the ground thaws, and the moment water returns to those lines, the assemblies protecting them are back in service and back on the compliance clock. Where water authorities require testing, typically annual where required, with the schedule set by the authority, an enormous share of a territory's testable devices come due in the same short stretch of the year. The result is a trade with a violent seasonal shape: a compressed spring window that can carry a disproportionate share of annual revenue, a long middle season of steadier commercial work, a second smaller pulse of fall shutdowns, and a winter that is exactly as quiet or as productive as you planned it to be.
Testers who fight this shape, or ignore it, run exhausting springs and hungry winters. Testers who build their calendar around it treat the year the way a farmer treats one: known seasons, known work in each, and preparation done before the season that needs it. Spring startup: where the year begins
Startup season begins when the freeze risk fades and irrigation contractors start pressurizing systems, and from the tester's chair it arrives as a wall of demand. Every irrigated property in the territory needs its system charged, inspected, and running, and the assembly on the irrigation line, most commonly a pressure vacuum breaker type, sometimes a reduced pressure principle or double check type depending on the hazard and the jurisdiction, needs its test once the system is live. Water authorities know the rhythm as well as anyone and time their compliance notices accordingly, which means property owners across the territory receive their test-due letters within weeks of each other and start down the approved tester list.
Startup itself is also where a tester earns easy goodwill or squanders it. Systems that sat all winter wake up with problems: seals that took a set, debris under checks, cracked components where water was left in the wrong place before freeze-up. A meaningful share of first tests after startup fail, and this is normal, not scandalous. The tester who explains that calmly, documents the failure precisely, and has a repair path ready, whether in-house through a repairer credential or through a trusted partner, turns a bad-news moment into the reason the customer keeps them. The tester who just red-tags and drives away leaves the account open to whoever handles the failure gracefully.
The most leveraged relationship in startup season is not with any property owner. It is with irrigation contractors. The contractor who starts up two hundred systems controls, in practice, when two hundred assemblies become testable, and many contractors would happily hand the testing to a reliable certified tester rather than manage owner questions about compliance letters. A tester riding one day behind a contractor's startup schedule, or in the same visit where the arrangement works, tests dozens of assemblies with zero acquisition cost and near-zero drive waste. One good contractor relationship can be worth more than a season of advertising, and it is renewed the same way customer relationships are: show up when promised, never make the contractor look bad, and file everything clean.
The compressed window: capacity is the whole game
Here is the structural fact of the spring: the demand arrives compressed, and your capacity is fixed. There are only so many working hours in the window between startup and the authorities' deadlines, and every scheduling decision in that window is a capacity allocation decision whether you treat it that way or not. The testers who thrive in the window share one habit: they fill it deliberately, in advance, instead of answering it as it happens.
Deliberate filling starts long before the season. Your customer records tell you every assembly that will come due and roughly when; the authority notice cycle tells you when owners will start calling. The move is to reach your existing book before the notices land, with a scheduled date, so that your retained customers enter the season already slotted and the notice they receive simply confirms what is already arranged. This does two things at once. It locks your best work into the window early, and it frees your remaining capacity for the new customers the notices will shake loose, who call down the tester list and get whoever answers. You want to be answering with a calendar in front of you, not a backlog.
Inside the window, protect the machine that does the work. Long days are the nature of the season, but the compressed window punishes breakdowns brutally: a truck problem, a gauge problem, or a health problem that costs a week in the quiet season costs a meaningful slice of annual revenue in the peak. Before the season: vehicle serviced, test kit's documented gauge accuracy current, which is commonly required, confirm locally, spare hoses and fittings stocked, and your recertification never expiring mid-window, which is precisely the kind of administrative ambush the early recertification allowance exists to prevent. During the season: file reports the same day anyway. The backlog you tolerate in your busiest weeks is the one that misses deadlines, and the season generates paperwork faster than any catch-up weekend can clear.
Running a route wave
The compressed window rewards a specific scheduling pattern: the route wave. Instead of booking each customer at whatever time they happen to call, you sweep the territory in planned geographic passes, filling each day with stops that cluster, and steering every request into the wave that passes near it. The customer who calls from the north end gets offered the days the wave is in the north end. Almost everyone accepts, because almost nobody cares which day their test happens; they care that it happens before their deadline and without their involvement.
Building the wave is mostly database work done in the off season. Map the book, group it into geographic clusters, sequence the clusters into a route order that respects authority deadlines, and estimate days per cluster from last season's pace. Then pre-schedule the book into that sequence, cluster by cluster, and leave planned slack inside each pass for the new customers the season will add, because it will add them, and the wave should absorb them where they geographically belong rather than bolting them onto the end as scattered one-offs. A wave with slack self-heals; a wave booked solid shatters on its first surprise.
A few practices keep a wave running once it is moving:
- Confirm access the day before each cluster, because a locked gate or an absent contact converts a two-minute test into a return trip that breaks the geography
- Batch by property type within clusters where you can, so residential quick stops and commercial access-heavy stops do not interleave and wreck the rhythm
- Hold a floating catch-up day each week for reschedules, failures returning for retest, and the stops weather stole
- Route repairs and retests into the next pass through that geography rather than backtracking, unless a compliance deadline forces the trip
- Track actual stops per day against plan weekly, so a wave running behind gets caught while there is still season left to fix it
The wave is also your pricing posture made physical. Work inside the wave is cheap for you to deliver and can be priced to win and hold; work that demands you break the wave, the remote one-off insisting on a specific morning across the territory, is expensive and should be priced as the exception it is, or scheduled into a later pass. The wave, in other words, is not just how you survive the window. It is how the window becomes the most profitable part of your year rather than merely the most tiring.
Fall: the second season
The year's second pulse comes when irrigation systems are winterized: drained and blown out ahead of the first hard freeze. Shutdown season is smaller than startup for a tester, because winterization itself is compressor work that irrigation contractors dominate and testing demand does not spike the way it does at startup. But it is far from empty. It is the season for cleanup and setup: the retests that failures and procrastinators pushed late, the properties whose authority deadlines fall late in the cycle, and above all the quiet commercial work that the spring wave had no room for.
Fall is also when next spring is won. The irrigation contractors you want to ride behind at startup are planning their spring while they winterize; the conversation that gets you attached to their schedule happens now, not in the chaos of the thaw. The property managers consolidating vendors for next year are doing it in the fall budgeting season. And your own database work, the mapping, clustering, and pre-scheduling that make the wave possible, is fall and winter work by nature. The testers who seem effortlessly organized in the spring bought that ease in the fall.
Smoothing the year: fire protection and commercial work
A testing business built purely on irrigation is a business with a magnificent spring and a dangerous rest of the year. The smoothing strategy is a deliberate second book of work that is indoors, deadline-flexible, or on a different cycle: assemblies on fire protection services, and the domestic and process assemblies in commercial buildings.
Fire line work is the natural counterweight. Assemblies serving fire sprinkler systems are indoors or in vaults, testable in any season, and attached to properties that already run year-round inspection calendars for their fire systems. Where the jurisdiction's cycle allows flexibility in when during the compliance period a test happens, fire and commercial work can be steered into your valleys, filling winter and midsummer weeks with revenue that irrigation could never provide. The fire lane has its own demands, a dedicated credential in the ASSE series, the 5140, addresses fire sprinkler cross-connection work, and restoration to service on a life-safety system is absolute, but for a tester building a year-round calendar, it is the single most valuable diversification available.
Commercial and institutional domestic work behaves similarly: mechanical rooms do not care about frost dates, multi-assembly properties reward the scheduling flexibility you have in the off season, and facilities staff generally prefer vendors who propose slow-season dates to vendors who try to squeeze them into a frantic spring. The composition to aim for is a book where the spring wave rides on irrigation volume while a commercial and fire base pays the fixed costs all year. When the slow-season base covers the overhead, insurance, recertification, vehicle, and the phone, the spring wave stops being survival revenue and becomes the profit engine it should be.
Winter, in this composition, stops being dead time. It is indoor testing season for the commercial base, repair season for what fall testing flagged, and office season for everything the field months starved: records reconciliation, authority registrations and renewals, gauge accuracy documentation, database cleanup, pre-scheduling the spring, and the recertification class booked into the window where it costs you nothing, which is exactly what the early recertification allowance is for.
Weather: plan for losing days, not for perfect ones
Every outdoor trade plans around weather, but the compressed window raises the stakes: a lost day in the peak is not inconvenience, it is capacity that does not come back. The planning error is not failing to predict weather, which nobody can do, it is building a schedule that assumes zero lost days and then being shocked when the season delivers some. Assume the losses. Build the slack. The floating catch-up day in each week of the wave exists precisely to absorb them, and a wave that finishes with unused slack finished early, which no customer has ever complained about.
Some weather calls are judgment, and the judgment should be conservative in a specific direction: a late hard freeze after systems are charged is the dangerous one, both for the systems and for the meaning of your tests, and a soaked week can make vault and pit work genuinely unsafe rather than merely unpleasant. The stops that weather steals should move by cluster, not one at a time, so the wave's geography survives the reshuffle. And keep an indoor reserve: a short list of interior commercial stops, retests, and mechanical room work that can be pulled forward on the day the sky cancels the outdoor plan. The testers who seem lucky with weather are the ones who always had somewhere indoors to be.
That is the calendar: a spring wave you pre-built all winter, a fall that cleans up the cycle and wins the next one, a commercial and fire base that pays the bills in the valleys, and enough slack, spares, and indoor reserve that no single week can break the season. The heartbeat is set by irrigation, but the business that survives on it is the one that learned to work the whole year.
