Cross-connection
Any actual or potential physical link between a potable water system and a source of contamination or pollution.
A cross-connection is any point where a drinking water line is joined, or could be joined, to a source of non-potable water or another substance. Common examples include a garden hose left submerged in a bucket, an irrigation system tied to a building supply, a boiler feed line, or a chemical dispenser plumbed into a faucet. The connection does not need to be actively flowing to count; the mere possibility of contact between the potable system and the other substance is enough to create a cross-connection.
Cross-connections matter because they are the entry points for every backflow event. Under normal conditions water moves from the public main toward the fixtures and the connection seems harmless. When pressure conditions reverse, through backsiphonage or backpressure, that same connection becomes a pathway that can pull or push contaminants into piping that serves drinking fountains, sinks, and even neighboring properties. This is why plumbing codes and water purveyors treat cross-connection control as a core public health responsibility rather than a routine maintenance detail.
Testers and property owners should learn to spot cross-connections during ordinary walkthroughs, not only during formal surveys. Look for hoses with submerged ends, chemical feed equipment, auxiliary water sources such as wells or storage tanks, and any machine that blends water with other fluids. Each identified connection must be either eliminated outright or protected by an appropriate method, such as an air gap or a testable backflow prevention assembly selected to match the degree of hazard involved.
